Business Central 2024 Wave 1: Optimization in the entry of time sheets

With the latest Business Central spring version, the entry of time sheets has also been optimized. Among other things, these can now be copied from existing time sheets to save time and effort.

Copying time sheets from previous periods saves time and effort as there is no need to enter data manually. The process allows time sheets to be created quickly and easily based on existing data. This increases productivity and efficiency. In addition, copying time sheets minimizes data entry errors and thus ensures greater data consistency.

The role center now offers the “New Time Sheets” tile in the self-service area for creating new time sheets to which no lines have yet been added. Business Central uses the working date on the “My settings” page to determine the current period. The “Current Time Sheet” button can also be used to open the current time sheet that is being recorded.

Optimized time sheet page

Finally, when opening the time sheet page, some improvements can be seen. For example, the newly added FactBox “Time Sheet Line Details” can be used to display comments on the time sheet lines as well as details on projects, resources and tasks.

The “Status” column of the lines also shows red and italic formatting if data required for transmission is missing. If the “Type” time sheet line is empty, the “Submit” action is disabled for the lines part of, as nothing can be submitted for these lines.

To make time recording even more efficient, lines can also be copied from other time sheets, including archived time sheets. This works via the actions “Copy lines from time sheet” or “Copy lines from time sheet with comments” in the “Prepare” action group on the “Time Sheet” page.

One or more time sheet lines can then be selected to be copied on the “Time Sheet Lines” page. The following options are available for time sheet lines: “View All”, “View Open” or “View Submitted”. The “Time Sheet Line Details” FactBox is also displayed on the page. This supports the selection of the lines to be copied with additional details, so that comments can also be copied, for example.

Depending on the company settings, the columns “Project No.”, “Project Task No.”, “Cause of Absence Code”, “Chargeable” and “Work Type” are shown or hidden in the time sheet lines. For example, if no codes for the cause of absence have yet been set up for the company, the “Cause of Absence Code” column is not displayed. In this case, Business Central assumes that the column is not being used. Displaying columns based on the settings has the advantage, that time sheet lines are clearer. Moreover only a few clicks are required to get to the data entry lines.
