Business Central 2024 Wave 1: Innovations in project production

With the current Dynamics 365 Business Central version, inventory management can be improved by assembling to order only when it’s required. To this end, the creation of an assembly order from a project planned in Business Central has been simplified with the latest update.

When an assemble-to-order item is entered in a project planning line, an assembly order will be created automatically in future thanks to a new feature in Business Central. This assembly order is based on the project planning line. Its items are in turn based on the item’s assembly BOM. The quantity of components in the assembly BOM (Bill of Materials) is multiplied by the order quantity. Details of the linked assembly order lines can be viewed on the Assemble-to-Order Lines page. These details can help to customize the assembly item.

As in sales, the linked assembly orders cannot be posted directly. Instead, the created assembly order is reserved for the project and Business Central synchronizes the item tracking between project planning lines and assembly orders. The assembly order can then be posted via the corresponding project book sheet line in the project entries and the items are deducted from the stock.

The feature integrates with warehouse management functions to simplify assembly and shipping and ensure that the workflow from project assembly to delivery runs smoothly.

The new functionality therefore offers the following advantages:

• Production of assembly items according to project possible

• When entering an assembly item in project planning lines:
–> Creation of an assembly order in the background
–> Possibility of exploding the assembly BOM in the project planning lines

• When posting a project consumption via the project book sheet:
–> Assembly order is posted
–> Stock of BOM components is deducted
